Imagine being able to cruise at 70+ MPH for hours and not strain your engine. Now you can with a Chief-Overdrive 4 speed constant mesh Transmission. The Chief Overdrive transmission project was began while Mark Hanlon of Hanlon engineering was returning from a business trip. While discussing the various idiosyncrasies of Indian Chiefs, he lamented that we were unable to ride oue bikes at speeds greater than 65mph for long distances. While short trips were ok, the engine feels “unhappy” running above 3000 rpm for sustained periods.
Thus, the idea for an overdrive transmission was born. Mark Hanlon began by researching the design of the stock Indian three-speed transmission, the gears and their metallurgy. He concluded that in order for this project to work several criteria needed to be met. First, the transmission had to fit into and look the same as the original Indian transmission. Second, the gearbox would need to be a constant mesh style as the “crash” style had too many problems. Third, the gear ratios of the original three-speed gearbox needed to be preserved and an overdrive gear added for highway cruising.
Engineering began in earnest March 1999.
He began the engineering by defining the design goal and constraints. He quickly realized that this was a difficult design problem due to the packaging constraints of the case and the cover. The design was created on the computer using a three dimensional solid modeling program.
Once the solid model was completed we were able to check for interferences and study the interaction between the various parts. The engineering process took over 2500 man hours to complete.
This transmission has three gears with similar ratios as the OEM trans and fourth gear is overdrive. This will enable the bike to go 72 mph with the engine at 2950 rpm using a large primary sprocket and a standard high profile tire. We have designed the gearbox to use the original lower case with a slightly modified top cover. In addition we have incorporated in the design a positive detent stop for each gear. This will give the rider a positive feel for each gear as shifting. (This is not a ratchet shifter).
The cost of the Chief Overdrive transmission is a bargain when the benefits of a modern transmission are added to your Chief! So if you’re a daily Indian Chief Rider don’t just ride, cruise in overdrive.
